Roth Contribution Reporting

The IRS has revised the 2006 Form W-2 to include Roth 401(k) contributions.  If the plan document allows Roth contributions and an employee is making Roth contributions, the total Roth contributions for the year are required to be reported using code AA in box 12 of the employee’s Form W-2.  The regular pre-tax contributions are also included in box 12 using code D.  Since the Roth contributions are after-tax deductions, remember to include them in boxes 1 (Wages), 3 (Social security wages) and 5 (Medicare wages) of the Form W-2 also.
